Juvederm Fillers

Overtime, the face loses volume and wrinkles develop as a result.  All the components of the skin that provide support and give the skin a plump, youthful appearance become less plentiful over time.  The sun accelerates that process to a great degree.  Ultimately, a line or wrinkle is visible as a depressed area of skin which creates a shadow.  Fillers are injectable products that “fill” the void created and in this manner can soften the appearance of the lines.  No filler can completely erase the lines and it is important to have realistic expectations for improvement.  Whereas Botox is used for wrinkles in the upper one third of the face, fillers are predominantly used for the lower two thirds of the face with some exceptions. Juvederm is a filler composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance of the body within the skin that helps the skin retain volume.

Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC are used for wrinkles around the mouth and nose area and can also be used to add volume to lips. The “XC” in the product name indicates the inclusion of 0.3 percent lidocaine. This is designed to prevent pain from the injections. It can also save time because you won’t need a separate topical pain reliever prior to the procedure. These fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body. Juvederm comes in formulations that are cross-linked (Hylacross technology) to various degrees to create thicker consistency better for deep lines, marionette lines and nasolabial folds (Ultra Plus XC) or thinner and better for fine lines around the lips (Ultra XC). This filler is common for the lower third of the face. The material is precisely injected into the treatment area and then the area is massaged to achieve a uniform distribution.

Juvederm Voluma is used for adding volume to the cheeks in an effort to regain natural contours and shape. Voluma is made up of hyaluronic acid that is crosslinked in a different manner (Vycross). The depth of Voluma injection is deeper and this is typically used in the middle third of the face including the cheekbone areas. The concept of augmenting the natural contours of the cheek is appealing and the results are immediately visible.
